This book has been written in a style which should make it useful for interested lay people as well as for those studying for property, planning and architectural qualifications. The use of technical language has been kept to a minimum and a wide range of development consideratons is covered in addition to the financial and construction aspects of development. These include the objectives, functions, roles and methods of operation of all those involved in the development process; social considerations; planning consideration, and others.Property development takes place to provide accommodation which satisfies the needs of people, and developers seek to provide suitable properties for the wide range of activities pursued by society in general. People need accommodation in which to reside, in which to work, and in which to pursue leisure activities. Accommodation is also needed for the wide range of ancilliary needs of society such as education and worship, and for public service activities such as hospital and health services, police services, and other public sector and specialist uses.Property development includes the erection of new buildings, the modification and improvement of exisiting buildings, and the demolition and repalcement of obsolete buildings. It can be an extremely complex ativity which involves ( or which should involve) a vast range of considerations over a wide range of inter - related subject areas, and it is one of the most complex activities undertaken by property people.
The author has 28 years experience of teaching on university courses producing graduates for the property profession, having been Professor of Land Economy at the University of Paisley and at the University of Western Sydney, his book ""An Introduction to Property Valuation"" - shortly to be produced in a fifth edition - has been widely used in a number of countries as a standard property education text since its first publication in 1975.
